Breckinridge shared in moderate abolitionist sympathies it seems, but was a pragmatist. He knew Kentuckians would not vote to simply emancipate slaves who were the source of their present financial well being. Charles Hodge had hoped they could be persuaded to allow slaves to purchase their own freedom, but they seemed resistant. Instead, Breckinridge offered "prospective
