Native to southeast Europe and southwest Asia, the fruit have been used in those regions but are quite astringent until bletted (similar to medlars) when they then take on a very interesting and pleasing taste. Plants are dioecious, being either male or female and best results occur when both are grown together. Prefers well drained soil, resents wet and poorly drained soils
