Meiji Japanese 1890's Sumida Gawa Figure This is a heavy piece of Earthenware with a flambe glaze on the clothing and the unglazed portions of the figure are painted. The early pieces of Sumida Gawa were made with exaggerated features and very detailed bulging eyes and long upward pointed nose, and bulging cheaks. The glaze is applied in a splash fashion, often running onto other body parts. There is a signature on the inside
